“Medico-legal claims against the state have doubled, from R37-bn to R74-bn, over the past five years, further eroding Covid-affected healthcare and threatening specialities,” reported Financial Mail (9 December 2021).

This was revealed after the National Health Department was asked to update SA Medical Journal reports of 2016 that the accumulated public sector medical litigation bill stood at R37-bn. KwaZulu-Natal: R27.41-bn; Gauteng: R17.32-bn; and Mpumalanga, R7.87-bn.
