Charlotte Maxeke Hospital still limping months after fire havoc

Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg - a dedicated Covid facility - is still limping along after a fire in April closed most of it, reported Times Live (6 December 2021).

The hospital offers only limited specialised healthcare, including medical and radiation oncology, renal care, cardiology, paediatric sub-specialties, critical care and high-risk maternity care.

According to the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure and Development the hospital will open block by block for partial occupation due to City of Joburg constraints on health and safety requirements, starting with Block 1 opening in May next year and ending with Block 5 opening in June 2024.

A spokesman said while over R944-m had been budgeted for the work, “expenditure to date is R4,1-m”.

A doctor, who asked not to be identified, said “nothing is getting fixed properly and the only successes were when Solidarity or Gift of the Givers had come in and taken over”.
