President calls for more speed on vaccine ip waiver

In an address to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) public forum Pres Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated his call for equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines, saying it is “unjust and unproductive” that only 2% of people in poor countries have been fully vaccinated while rich nations that have coverage of 60% or more have managed to reopen their economies.

Major drug companies oppose setting aside patents on Covid-19 vaccines and are supported by countries in which they are based.

Meanwhile WTO director-general Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said with the pandemic having pushed 100-m on the African continent into poverty, the situation is “morally unacceptable”.
