Health Minister Joe Phaahla expressed his concern about an emerging trend in infections, with an 18.2% increase in new Covid-19 cases in just the last week. The highest numbers of new infections were reported in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, reported EyeWitness News (20 August 2021). The Eastern Cape and Northern Cape have also registered spikes.
However, the hospital admission rate is down by 5.4% - compared to this time last week.

Phaahla urged people to get their jabs as soon as possible as vaccine sites are now open to all adults with a valid ID.
