Court battle looms over junior doctors’ placements

The DoH has been given until July 12, to provide community service placements to 465 unplaced medical interns. This follows an attorney’s letter on behalf of 465 doctors stating that the department had failed to place the interns in violation of their rights in terms of sections 22 and 33 of the Constitution

The letter of demand comes after the DoH blamed the delay on funding shortfalls and consultations about additional posts with National Treasury and provincial health departments. Attorney Matthew Yeko, who is spearheading the litigation, said they had heard nothing from the DoH since the letter was sent. The next step would be to proceed with court action. – Fin24 (6 July 2021).
