According to the Medical Research Council’s (CRM) latest report the weekly number of excess natural deaths in Gauteng rose to a 2 242 high in the week to June 26. The report shows that there have been 176 700 excess deaths since May 2020, a figure almost three times higher than the official death tally from Covid-19, which stood at 60 647 as of June 30. The excess deaths reflect those caused directly by the coronavirus, and “collateral” deaths due to people’s inability to obtain health services. Earlier this week, Netcare CEO Richard Friedland said the private hospital group had 45% more Covid-19 patients admitted to its facilities in Gauteng than in the second wave, driven in part by the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant. – Business Day (2 July 2021).
