Discovery and Mediclinic have decided not to expand their Covid-19 vaccine sites. The decision follows delays and a last-minute hold on the release of Johnson & Johnson’s (J&J) single-shot jab, as well as an expected shortage of vaccines. Only 1.3-m Pfizer doses have so far been delivered to SA. A shipment of more than 630 000 is expected on Sunday but it will take several days for the vaccines to

be cleared by the national control laboratory and dispatched to sites.

*Ryan Noach, CEO of Discovery Health, said Discovery is currently operating a single mass-vaccination site in Sandton, and will not open more sites until there is greater security of supply.

*Gerrit de Villiers, CCO of Mediclinic Southern Africa, said there had been delays in deliveries to the 10 sites it had planned to open this week.

*Martin Kingston, chair for Business for SA said the country is currently operating in a vaccine-constrained environment, but vaccine supply should improve in the coming months.
