US to back SA proposal to waive vaccine IP protections at WTO
The US trade representative, Katherine Tai, has announced that the US will support a proposal to waive intellectual property protections for COVID-19 vaccines at the World Trade Organisation (WTO). If granted, the proposal will increase global supply of COVID-19-vaccines and better access for poor countries.
SA and India have been urging WTO members to temporarily suspend rules on IP rights, arguing that it would be the most efficient and equitable way to address vaccine shortages in poor countries.
The move has been opposed by drug makers, who say the waiver plan is ineffective.
