Vaccinoligist gives prescription for a return to normality
SA needs to vaccinate 15-m people in the next four months to regain a relatively normal life, said Wits vaccinologist, Prof Shabir Madhi, in a virtual event hosted by financial services group PSG.
Madhi said the goal of vaccination should be to reduce deaths from the disease to a similar level to influenza. (Flu killed about 11 500 people a year between 2013 and 2015, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases.)
SA’s COVID-19 death toll relative to the size of its population ranked 11th, with a death rate of close to 190 per 100 000 population.
According to Madhi it was unclear how long vaccine-induced protection would last but said he was optimistic it would endure for at least two or three years.
