On Tuesday, March 30, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize confirmed in Parliament that negotiations on vaccine procurement are complete, and signing will be taking place in next 48 hours. SA now had 31-m doses of J&J vaccines “in the pipeline”. In addition, SA has signed a term sheet with Pfizer for 20-m doses, signed an agreement with Covax for 12-m doses and also participates in the African Union initiative. Mkhize said that Covax, at this stage, can only offer the AstraZeneca and Novavax vaccines, which, as per the advice of the ministerial advisory committee on vaccines, are not suitable for our setting.
