Private sector wants in on SA’s vaccine rollout
‘A growing frustration by business was clear when Shoprite CEO Pieter Engelbrecht recently said SA’s private sector should be allowed to secure vaccines in a bid to speed up the rollout, reported Times Live (23 March 2023). Engelbrecht said it is critical that staff should be vaccinated as there are 25-m customers through Shoprite stores every month.
According to Charmane Russell, spokesperson for the Minerals Council of SA the mining industry could vaccinate between 60 000 and 80 000 people a day and could vaccinate at least 2.5-m to 3-m people – employees. The mining industry has previously volunteered to contribute funding to vaccine procurement and make available its healthcare resources and infrastructure to the vaccination programme if needed.
