Private sector to help state vaccine rollout
According to Discovery CEO Adrian Gore there seems to be enough funding for the public and private sectors to fund the vaccine rollout as required. Gore was appointed by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize last month to chair a vaccines acquisition task team to coordinate private sector vaccine financing, procurement, logistics and administration.
Gore said a consortium of private-sector players, including Discovery, was looking to create 50 vaccination centres that could inoculate 40 000 to 50 000 people a day and is working with the National Health Department and B4SA to finalise the collaboration.
* Meanwhile SA has signed a deal with pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson (J&J) that adds 2-m more vaccine doses to those initially secured, on top of the 9-m doses of J&J’s single-shot vaccine that were originally secured. SA also secured 20-m vaccine doses from Pfizer, which will be delivered from the second quarter of this year. Additionally, 12-m vaccine doses have been secured from the Covax facility.
