According to Adrian Gore, chairperson of the Covid-19 vaccine acquisition task team the SA government will be able to cover between 60% and 70% of the cost of the vaccination programme, and the rest was dependent on negotiations with the private sector, which included medical aid companies. Gore said the Department of Health and government are negotiating with manufacturers about it, purely on the basis of access. According to Gore he issue isn’t that the country won’t be able to afford the vaccine - it’s about which one will work best.

An official decision would be communicated in Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s budget speech next month and would detail where the money would come from.
