AstraZeneca can’t sell C-19 vaccines in SA
The global pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca does not hold the rights to sell its C-19 vaccine (the cheapest on the market) in SA, reported News24 (13 January 2021). These rights belong to the Serum Institute of India (SII).
Meanwhile, government claimed in September 2020 to have initiated talks with AstraZeneca and did not confirm any discussions with SII.
Last week Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced that SII will provide SA with 1.5-m doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, sparking questions over when the request was made to the SII and why only 1.5-m doses were asked for. Apparently SII only applied for the emergency use authorisation of the vaccine with the SA Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) on January 4.
