Scientists fear vaccines may not work against SA’s new coronavirus variant

UK scientists are not fully confident that Covid-19 vaccines will work on a new variant of the coronavirus found in SA, according to Robert Peston, the political editor of UK television station ITV (4 January 2021).
Scientists, including BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin and John Bell, regius professor of medicine at the University of Oxford, said they are testing the vaccines on the new variants and they could make any required tweaks in about six weeks.

However, according to Peston the British health secretary, Matt Hancock, is worried about the SA Covid-19 variant because they are not as confident the vaccines will be as effective against it as they are for the UK’s variant.
