Bloomberg reported on January 3, that the vaccines SA is entitled to in terms of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Covax program will only arrive in the second quarter of 2021. Government talks with drug companies about supplementing SA’s Covax allocation are ongoing, however it is unclear when or whether those shots will be made available.
The Solidarity Fund, which was established to support the government’s pandemic response and is backed by some of the country’s biggest companies and richest individuals, paid the initial R283-m Covax deposit.
It will cost SA R2.7-bn to secure its full allocation of 6-m doses – sufficient to cover about 10% of the population
