Medical scheme administrator Discovery Health has launched a prepaid voucher system for private sector general practitioner consultations, targeting the millions of South Africans in formal employment who cannot afford traditional medical scheme cover, reported Business Day (7 December 2020).

Discovery Prepaid Health, will enable a consumer to buy a R300 voucher that covers a consultation with a networked GP, either for themselves or someone else. CEO Ryan Noach said this was a response to the fact that the regulatory environment has not come up with a solution for formally employed people to reliably access primary healthcare.

Discovery will sell the vouchers online and in 350 000 retail outlets. In August, Netcare launched NetcarePlus GP vouchers, which range from R290 for a virtual consultation to R430 for a faceto-face consultation and acute medication.
