Gauteng Premier David Makhura has appointed Nomathemba Mokgethi as the province’s new health MEC. He will replace Bandile Masuku, who was fired after a Special Investigating Unit (SIU) report into allegations of tender irregularities.

Makhura also announced the appointment of an “intervention team” to turnaround the Gauteng health department, which he said suffers from “deep, systemic and structural” problems that require more than the appointment of new MEC, reported BusinessLIVE (2 December 2020).

The intervention team includes Mokgethi, senior provincial government officials, and three people nominated by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize - Percy Mahlati, Zethu Qunta and Keith Shongwe.
