SAMA calls for ‘urgent’ intervention in Eastern Cape
Figures released by the National Health Department on December 1, show the Eastern Cape Health Department accounted for 1 217 of 2 302 new Covid-19 infections confirmed across the country between Sunday and Monday – only 52.8% of new infections. It only accounted 55% (32) of the 58 confirmed deaths.
According to Times Live (2 December 2020) the SA Medical Association (SAMA) criticised the health department for its “severe” lack of leadership as coronavirus cases in the province continue to climb. Sama said it was also concerned about the “inadequate” number of doctors and nurses in the province.
SAMA called for “urgent” intervention in the Eastern Cape as the situation had already moved beyond a “critical” point. It also called on doctors to assist at Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth, which is the country’s Covid-19 epicentre.
