Nelson Mandela Bay sees second surge in deaths
The latest Medical Research Council (MRC) report shows weekly natural deaths in Nelson Mandela Bay have been tracking above the upper band for the past three weeks.
The weekly number of natural deaths has shown a second surge with an excess of 245 deaths in the week to 10 November. While there has been a slight increase in the number of natural deaths reported in SA in the week to November 10, only the Eastern Cape and Free State are tracking above the upper prediction band. The total number of natural deaths fell steadily from a peak of 15 567 in the week ending July 21 to reach a low of 8 433 in the week ending September 29, as SA’s coronavirus epidemic waned. The MRC has previously said Covid-19 deaths are underreported, but also noted that some excess deaths are “collateral” deaths caused by people being unable to access health services in time.
