Dr. Peter Cole
is a highly experienced chemical pathologist and medical professional with a
distinguished career spanning over four decades. His extensive expertise in
pathology and leadership in medical laboratories has significantly contributed
to the field of pathology in South Africa and across multiple countries in
Africa.
Dr. Peter Cole began his medical career as a Medical Officer at Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, in January 1981. Shortly thereafter, he served as a Medical Officer with the South African Defence Force in Windhoek, Namibia, from July 1981 to June 1983. He further honed his skills as a Mine Medical Officer at Winkelhaak Mine Hospital in Evander, South Africa, from July 1983 until 1985. Following this, he pursued his passion for pathology, serving as a Pathology Registrar at the UCT Medical School from 1985 to 1990.
In 1990, Dr. Peter Cole joined Lancet Laboratories as a Chemical Pathologist, a role he excelled in until 1993. His exemplary performance and deep understanding of the field led to his promotion to Managing Partner, a position he held from 1993 to 2021. Under his leadership, Lancet Laboratories expanded its footprint across Africa, becoming one of the leading pathology services providers on the continent.
Dr. Peter Cole has also played a pivotal role in various other organizations. He has been an active member of the National Pathology Group of South Africa, where he currently serves as the Chairman of the Tariff Committee, a position he has held since 1995. In 2000, he became Chairman of BARC SA and has continued to serve in this capacity to this day.
Throughout his career, Dr. Peter Cole has actively contributed to the advancement of pathology through research and publications. His notable works include a dissertation on "Purine metabolism in red blood cells" and a study titled "Removal of hypoxanthine from ischemic rat kidneys by PPROP-primed human erythrocytes," which was submitted to Transplantation.
Dr. Peter Cole's dedication to the field of pathology and his leadership in various capacities have made significant impacts on healthcare in South Africa and across Africa. His contributions continue to shape the future of pathology, ensuring high standards of medical diagnostics and laboratory services are maintained across the continent.
